starlogs | try to do right what is wrong

[ this could be better, but it sure could be worse, too. carolina wanted no part in anything valentine's related like some people on the ship seemed to be planning, so this works as a really nice distraction, as far as she's concerned. sure, it made the escort mission out of the training areas a little more interesting than she would have liked, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. and now she's in her armour, with the mag lock on her boots easy to activate, which means she doesn't have too much to complain about.

for now, at least.

she starts off moving through the residence halls (mostly bouncing off walls, because it's quicker than walking) and stopping at the rooms of people she knows, checking in on them and opening doors as necessary. are you having trouble in the halls or elevators? well, she might be able to help with that, too. ]

[Also bouncing down the halls, trying to check on his various friends, is Goku. The lack of gravity had been pretty alarming at first, but now he's moving like a pro! He's been kicking off from wall to wall to move forwards, helped along by the red staff in one hand, and doing pretty well when one front flip sends his cape into his face and blocks his vision as it wraps around his head.]

Ah- wait- [Disorientated, he ends up staying upside down in mid-air, still soaring down the hall towards Carolina while he tries to untangle himself.

Uh, watch out?]

[ simply watching out is for people with slower reflexes. carolina catches the movement before he gets too close and opts for helping, reaching out to grab the wall for support, anchoring herself there. this, of course, means that as goku goes tumbling past, she can grab onto his nearest limb (a leg) and stop him. ]

Hold on, there.

[ ... as if he could. she's helping, really. ]

[Carolina can go ahead and grab him, like a hero.] Uwaah! [Goku flails comically with his free limbs for a second, finally getting his cape to float up out of his face.]

'm trying! [Twists his body around to try and look back at her.] Uh, thanks!

You're... welcome. [ it's a little stilted, but she means well. so she gives him a little tug over to the nearest wall, letting him find something to grab onto before she lets go. ]

I don't think capes and zero G really go together.

[Goku scrambles but with some effort manages to grasp onto a doorframe and hold himself in place. Look at this hapless teen.]

Huh? No way! It's totally fine! Capes are cool.

[ that gets a little tilt of carolina's head, as if she has no idea what to do with a comment like that. ]

But not at all practical.

Nah, it's fine!

[He says, as if he wasn't just choking on the stupid thing.]

Anyway, what about you? [He reaches over to knock curiously on Carolina's armoured shoulder.] Isn't that heavy? That's not practical either, right?

It's perfectly practical. [ and yes, does weigh an actual ridiculous amount. but it protects her from everything and has sweet magnetic locks on the boots, so it's perfect for situations like these.

which is why she sounds a little offended. ]

I could walk on the hull of this ship in this armour and wouldn't feel a thing.

But if the ship weren't all weird like this, you wouldn't be able to jump around an' stuff, right? It looks too heavy.

[Jumping is important!]

It looks cool though, and I bet it makes punching ya suck real bad!

That it does. [ which is a good thing, for someone who winds up getting punched a lot. (usually because she throws the first punch, in everyone else's defence.) ]

And I don't have to worry too much about jumping when I can do anything else I need to in this. I can pass on jumping.

[ they have different priorities. ]

Mm, I guess... [Not everyone fights like they're playing the floor is lava, after all.] What else can you do with it?

[ well. there's re-l. so much for carolina having to open her door for her; instead, she activates her boots against the floor a few doors down from where the young woman is having some gravity difficulties, just watching for a moment, honestly kind of enjoying it. for re-l's mouth, she probably deserves it.

but she can't stand here being smug forever, so carolina does eventually take a few steps closer, even if re-l seems to be stuck looking the other way. ]

You having a good time?

[ HELLO HAVE YOU MISSED THIS VOICE AND THIS HELMET? of course you have. ]

[ Busting out of the prison of her room after an hour or two of sitting in silence hadn't seemed like a bad plan. There was enough furniture in the room to have helped her navigate to the door and give the leverage to get herself out - granted, Re-L doesn't really need much space to be able to drift out of a doorway.

- The problem had been when she was finally out, naturally. She's still one arm down and, well.. it made it a little hard to navigate zero gravity for the first time in a way that was even and controlled. After a few bumps in to the walls and furniture she'd resigned herself to lingering where she can hold on to the ceiling until she sorted herself out.

Which she still hadn't up until the time Carolina comes across her.

There's an audible groan from the teen as she registers it's Carolina, turning to take a look at her, officially in her palest, bare faced state and clearly not awake enough to deal with this bullshit. ]

God, of course it would be you that'd come through first.

[ how impossibly smug can one grown woman possibly sound? carolina's pushing it, because she can and because re-l's so palpably unimpressed. it's attitude at the other's expense, sure, but she's also not going to leave her hanging there. unless that's what re-l wants, of course, but it doesn't seem that way. ]

Look, are you doing okay?

That's just my horrendous luck, so yes. [ No holds barred, even if Carolina was probably going to be the one to save her skin so to speak. After all, she'd be stuck until a stranger came along or she figured it out on her own otherwise. Which.. may take a little time with her also weightless stomach doing flips all on it's own from what she can tell. ]

I'll be better once my stomach and brain connect the fact that weightlessness doesn't have to mean feeling sick. So, in short, not very okay.

[ And then, just in case Carolina thought that was a cry for help - ] I'll figure it out.

[ re-l's attitude aside, carolina's sympathetic to that. her first few training exercises in zero gravity had been a similar sort of hell, especially when it came to learning how to win a fight when no particular way was up. just because she doesn't think twice about it now doesn't mean she didn't lose her lunch as a teenager. ]

It helps if you pick one wall to always be up and always make sure you've got something stable to get a grip on before you run out of momentum. [ a pause, then- ] So you can stay on the ceiling all day if you really want to.

I was entertaining that option but the problem becomes when the artificial gravity is put back in place if I do that .. I doubt they'll take the time to broadcast a warning so I'd be dropping back to the floor with only one good arm to catch myself with. [ Sure, she had been hard headed and decided to leave her room regardless of the fact that it would've been easier to stay, but sue her, she's curious about what's going on and what people are doing with the systems down. These were perfect times for all sorts of mischief after all.

And while Re-L may be tight laced she was always down for a little mischief. ]

My problem is also, partially, trying to stabilize with only one arm that is useful. I could take my arm out of the sling but movement seems to irritate the healing of the injured part of my arm, so risking being counter-productive in my healing is not something I wish to do either

- - Do you have any ideas on that?

[ she's genuinely not sure if that's some shot at her advice or if it's a real question, but carolina's considering what to say to re-l anyway. this is something she's trained for, after all. ]

Stay out of large spaces, stick to halls where you can grip something that'll keep your feet pointed to the ground. I would offer to travel with you, but I know you'd refuse. [ stubborn understands stubborn, after all. ] But I can keep an eye out for boots with magnetic locks for you.

[ For once it's a real question, even if she doesn't really want to have to ask Carolina for anything. Everything since leaving the dome was a new experience she just.. didn't remember asking for anything even remotely like experiencing weightlessness in space.

But then again, she's also discovering that she has a weak stomach for spinning, which is useful knowledge for later - ]

I don't need a baby sitter. [ It's a tired snarl, at least, before she's surreptitiously slipping the arm that had been injured on Oros out of the sling and using it to right herself, shoving back down toward the floor and using a bit of wall to stay upright and where she is. McCoy had warned her not to push her nervous system too much, which was why she'd taken the precaution of the sling, but - this seemed a worthy situation. ]

I wouldn't mind a pair of those boots, though. It would seem I may have more use for them than I'd thought, if this may be happening again. Even if it's not all that common.

[ for what it's worth, carolina isn't going to comment on re-l's arm. she may have told the girl to rest, but honestly, if it were her? she would have ditched the sling by now. re-l's not stupid, just stubborn. ]

Well, we haven't been here that long. Maybe this sort of thing usually happens all the time and we've just missed it so far. [ which is carolina's way of saying she'll help her be prepared if she can. ] But trust me, Re-L, I am not going to babysit you.

The survival systems going out rather regularly doesn't seem like something that would be entirely productive.. [ Now that she's back upright and everything else her stomach seems to be evening out a little bit. That much makes her a little bit less on edge, though the entire ordeal of having the oxygen systems and everything else out is very much where she's not ok. Slowly suffocating to death in all possibility? Not alright. ]

Good. Lest I have to become a very petulant child. [ Not that she wasn't already, but - ] The bigger issue is the life support systems if they don't come back on in an appropriate amount of time.

With a ship this size, life support can be down for a few hours before things get dire. I wouldn't start worrying yet.

[ then again, that's easy for her to say when she's spaceworthy in her armour. she has nothing to worry about except everyone else. but she knows ships, is plenty used to them, so she has an idea of just how wrong things can go before the situation can't be saved. the joys of growing up in an intergalactic war zone! ]

And hey, if this does happen all the time, they're used to fixing it. [ not a terribly appropriate joke, but carolina's sense of humour is stilted at best. ]

It would also be remiss to not at least begin to think of a course of action if the need comes up. I wouldn't leave it to this crew to be all that helpful for those of us that aren't Eluvians. [ The forethought on that is also, partially, the fact that she's recently had to escape an apocalypse situation in a dome that, when it came to escaping it? Wasn't too unlike the Eluvio in the end. After all, if Pino and Kristeeva hadn't come along, she might've been taking a long swim. She knows she wouldn't survive without a suit and oxygen, and makes a mental check list to get her hands on those materials as soon as possible, just in case. ]

If it does happen all the time, I want to know what the hell I ever did to the universe to be brought to a huge rust-bucket in space.

Trust me, sometimes a person just lucks out. [ and gets piled with terrible things. carolina's seen it happen often, probably more often than not. a lot of people deserve their fates but most of them don't. ]

But you're right, I won't really trust this crew if things get worse.

I guess my next plan is to get myself a suit and helmet just in case there's any further issues with oxygenation... [ Procuring things she probably shouldn't have was a small talent, but a very important one. It was just that her list of materials she'd like to have to maintain a sense of preparedness kept growing larger and larger without very much progress on procuring. ]

Hopefully it won't, though I'm surprised they don't have multiples of parts considering they.. float through space for long periods of time, presumably..

Multiples doesn't mean things don't still break or take long periods of downtime to switch out. I've never been on a ship like this before and I have no idea how good their engineers are. Guess we'd better hope they're good.

[ but she's been on plenty of ships. she knows how maintenance time can vary. ]

Yes, but one would think they'd also have some kind of back up system to make the ship a little less.. unstable. After all, it can't be good for the general populace to not know whether they'll have air or gravity the next time they wander back to their home for whatever period of time.

If I were a citizen it would make me ill at ease. [ Hell, she'd been ill at ease when she'd been attacked once - how did the people around here feel alright with all of this going on for an extended period of time? ]

Though I guess the citizens of this ship may be used to worse, possibly.

People who spend a lot of time on ships tend to get used to everything terrible about ships, yeah. [ carolina shrugs enough to make it obvious in her armour, shaking her head as she continues- ] And so will you.

Ugh.. I hope I don't. [ Of course the sheer fact that she would still be there period would mean that, naturally, she would. But it's just within her personality to be obstinate and difficult.. sorry about it Carolina.

She pauses for a moment to orient herself again, a foot holding her in place as her injured arm begins to ache. ]

Physically this arm is fine.. it's just my neurological system needs time to catch up, according to McCoy... [ Why she's telling Carolina this she isn't totally sure, but there it is. ] Either way this is a shitty situation to be in with one bum arm.

Yeah, seems that way. [ it's with a slightly smug air of i wouldn't know, since it's not a position she'd ever let herself get stuck in. of course, all her zero g training would have to be good for something.

carolina pauses a moment, then pulls together something polite to say. ]

Look, I know you don't need to be babysat, but if you need something or need to get somewhere, let me help you.

I'll see what I feel like when the need arises.. [ At lest she's honest to a fault, as usual, though if she was really honest she'd say she'd only call her if it was absolutely necessary. Her ability to be stubborn even in moment of utter and ridiculous need for assistance was probably what drove more people before Carolina insane for a longer period of time.

Either way, it would seem that her sea legs are coming in a little more the longer she spends back upright in the correct orientation, taking measured breaths in and out in an effort to control her stomach. ]

This may get worse before it gets better, as it stands.
