( closed ) and I'm floating in the most peculiar way

WHO: James T. Kirk & Leonard McCoy
WHERE: Enterprise
WHEN: February 14th (+ another thread later on)
WHAT: Waking up with no power and zero gravity isn't their idea of fun.
WARNINGS: Nothing aside from Bones panicking and Jim hating himself a little later on. Possible mentions of death too.

When things actually started going down, Jim was too fast asleep to realize. Even the faint glow filtering through the windows as the nearest ship blew up wasn't enough to wake him, eyes shut for a while longer. The fifteen minutes of peace that followed would be the last bit of decent and unhindered rest he'd likely get in a while.

It started with a strange tingling sensation, at first. As the systems started malfunctioning, it was the engines shutting down completely and the whole ship going dead silent that had him waking up. His heart thrummed to the beat of the engines and the warp core, and suddenly everything felt... misaligned.

He nearly startled awake at that, shoving the blankets off of him in one sudden move as he got to his feet. Except his feet touched the ground for about a second or two before his whole body started to float, as if weightless, and the more he struggled to reach the ground, the farther away he got from it.

"What the fuck—" he looked over sharply, seeing Bones's silhouette starting to lift from the bed even in the dark of the room. Despite the evident lack of gravity, he tried to glide over to him. "Bones. Wake up, wake up— Bones!"

Jim had him there even if it annoyed him. Especially with Jim. He should learn to give less with the guy, but he still gave in every time. Where it usually got him in a heap of trouble most of the time, he still rather be in that trouble than not be there when Jim needed him. Maybe he was a damn masochist and didn't even realize it.

Still, he snorted out a soft sound that bordered on a wry laugh. "So you say." More like he thought of him long enough to drag him into stupidity or to play that part of wingman. Something he was damn happy cut down to zero lately. Not that he wanted to bring it up. He figured Jim just finally grew out of some of that mindset from the academy.

Either way, he wasn't so sure about that statement. Likely the only reason Jim did it was cause he was the only one here. "Regardless, you didn't have to." Still didn't, actually.

Following along, he angled his head at Jim's statement. Maybe that alleviated some of that strange feeling weighing on him. That thought that he was just the body there and nothing else. And really, that was a bit harsh. Jim was a good person. It honestly didn't surprise him if he thought of whoever got stuck with him here with the Eluvio and its crew.

Once they were off the lift, he blinked out of his thoughts and stopped as Jim turned to him with that question. He felt a tiny shock of surprise at that and he worked quickly through it while his mouth jumped out ahead of his thoughts. "Why wouldn't it be?" At least that question was a truthful one even if he didn't let himself think it through first.

His brow furrowed slightly at Jim's words, though. The choice seemed slightly off for something that was 'just cause he could'. But then, maybe that was exactly why he wanted clarification. So Leonard wouldn't go jumping to some conclusion and do something stupid. Like getting his hopes up. "It's fine, Jim. It's not weird, just surprised me is all."

"Talk it down anymore, Jim, and I might be offended by whatever it is." He offered him a small smile to go with that light tease. He honestly didn't know what to think about it. Jim was so determined to make it look like nothing that Leonard wondered why Jim even bothered. It just seemed strange is all.

Either way, he was glad to see the man smile again even if he wasn't so sure how he felt about it. Still, it was better to have Jim happy, or close to it, than upset. He also didn't resist even a little when Jim tugged him off the lift to move down the hall to his room. "Besides, if it weren't fine, I don't think I'd get you all those books back home on crazy whims." It just became a habit. Jim liked paper books, so he picked them up if he saw one he was pretty certain Jim didn't have.

So how was it any different? Other than the fact that Leonard found he rarely did anything without something making him think about Jim. And lately it had gotten ridiculous.

Following Jim into the room, he tipped his head to watch him dig out whatever it was he was looking for. His brows rose at that confession and he smiled a little. "Yeah... I hoped you did." Because not many people did concrete things for Jim. Stupid little gestures that didn't need anything in return. It was a hunch years ago to try and just get him something and he just kept it up.

Not that he did birthdays really. He had a feeling that wasn't the best choice back then when Jim was still getting past the connections of that day. Even if he hated that shit.

Then Jim was turnin' about with that box and his eyes went to it instantly. He started to comment the bow was cute, but he bit it back and reached out to take the box. His fingertips idly pulled at the bow before he looked up at Jim a moment. "Thanks, Jim." Pulling the bow untied, he caught the strip of fabric between his fingers to open the box. Then he did huffed a soft laugh. "Chocolate? Stickin' with tradition I take it." How unlike Jim to be so... traditional. "Where on earth did you find chocolate on the Eluvio?"

When he caught that smile, he felt something warm coil in his chest. He liked seeing the idiot happy. God, he liked it too much to be honest. Funny, wasn't receiving a gift supposed to be more about him being happy? Not him being happy to see Jim happy? Not that any of his feeling about the captain were normal. Smiling back down at the box, he rolled his eyes playfully. "Can't say I've been shopping for food yet, so I must've missed that."

Then he stopped at that last admission. Blinking a few times, he looked back up at Jim, both brows rising slightly. "You made them?" Jim? Cooked something? Not just anything, but Valentine's chocolate? "Really? Well, I'll be..."

He huffed another laugh, this time a smile breaking out over his lips that was wide and bright. "You say it's nothing, but I am damn honored to know James Tiberius Kirk let me have his results of a venture into cooking." He had to tease him. Cause it was too damn cute not to. And even if Jim said it meant nothing, it sure meant a helluva lot to him. Even if Jim didn't actually make it for him or with him in mind. He still was given part of the results. "Really, darlin', thanks."

Looking into the box, he noted that the looked rather nice for a first try. Not that he would be terribly surprised if Jim managed to make something perfect on his first try. the man was a genius when he put his mind to things. And really... he couldn't help but wonder what got under his skin to make him want to make something like chocolate.

Not that he planned to ask.

Instead, he reached into the box to pull out a piece. And as he slipped it into his mouth he had to admit, Jim looked so damn adorable being all pleased with himself. "I'll be damned, that's pretty good there, darlin'." He laughed lightly, and ducked his head a little. It was. Not bad at all.

"Guess my promise of dinner, late though it will turn out to be, was a good call then. Too bad I can't do anything for you just yet." Not with the power still not quite right and no access to fresh supplies to cook while they were trapped here. Though he wished he could. Either way, he lightly closed the box and curled the ribbon back around it.

If nothing else, he was just real glad Jim looked so much better. More content now.

Standing there for a moment, he smiled just a little then reached out to catch the back of Jim's neck to pull him closer. Purposely tipping the man's head forward, he pressed a kiss to his forehead. It was very similar to that night when they lost power, but the touch felt right. Like it needed to happen like that. It just felt like a better thank you than just saying those words.

Lightly releasing him, he tipped his head toward the mess. "You read my mind. How did you know I was just dyin' to eat one of those." He smirked lightly and took a step back. Rations were damn near awful, but well, they weren't so bad if you had at least good company.

Good thing for him that wasn't in short supply. "C'mon, darlin'." Catching the sleeve of Jim's shirt, he wmiled just a little and pulled him back to the lift to head toward the mess.
