WHO: Yuuri Katsuki & Leonard McCoy
WHERE: Med Bay
WHEN: 1/8
WHAT: Friendship! And hopefully picking up new skill sets conducive to surviving in space
WARNINGS: None yet

The location of the med bay had stuck with him since his arrival, accompanied by memories of the swift, impersonal examination and blood tests that had followed decompression. As an athlete, Yuuri dislikes being at the doctor's office on principle; it means sickness that could take precious time out of his training, or even injuries that spell the end of a career. Yuuri tries not to keep any of those things in mind as he retraces his steps to this part of the ship.

Everything is as he remembers from his last trip here, from the brisk pace of the workers, to the shelves of medication. There's a face he doesn't remember, though. The man standing just in front of him seems more interested in studying the medication on display than getting assistance from one of the workers... but Yuuri's manners won't let him jump past without checking first.

"Excuse me," Yuuri says, when the man just happens to look his way. "Are you waiting for someone to help you?"

He didn't feel right here. He felt like someone ripped him up by the roots and decided a ground based plant should take a shine to being an aerial root. It just didn't make any damn sense. Which was part of why he went back to the Eluvio to just... see it. Maybe he would like it more.

So far, not so much.

The Enterprise felt wrong without the crew and the only time it felt like home was when Jim was around. So why not look at the rest of his new civilization. It should be no surprise to him that his feet took him here. To something that should look familiar to him. 'Cept, it didn't. It looked more like something off of a space horror film, and maybe that was just him being sensitive about waking up there having no clue what was goin' on.

Arms crossed over his chest, he started to take inventory of the place. Point out things he knew, things he didn't. Try to establish some sort of purpose. It was easier to do that than look at the people that strangely didn't make him think... people.

The voice got him to turn, his head inclined just slightly as he regarded someone that, well look at that, looked like he had a spark a life to 'im. "I don't need these zombies to help me do what I already know how to do. Just seein' what technology they have. Where I am not so fond of these people, I know better than to turn my nose up at medical advances. Is something wrong?" On habit, he ran an evaluating eye over this person, gauging age and health while trying to decide if he was out of line if he pulled out his tricorder.

"That's right." The southern drawl to his accent slowed the words as though he was considering the other for a moment. Finally he shrugged a shoulder just a little bit before dropping his arms to straighten up. May as well be polite. "McCoy, Dr. Leonard McCoy." He offered his head in greeting, not so sure this was something one did in greeting for wherever the kid was from, but he hoped it wasn't rude regardless.

"You came to learn first aid from a bunch of zombies, huh?" Leonard's brow furrowed at that, his nose scrunching just a bit. "Bet that would be amusin' to watch." Pressing his lips together, he finally glanced back at the room. "If you wanna learn somethin' like that, I can probably help more. Their tech isn't bad, but the Enterprise is better. I also know my stuff from archaic practices on up." He had plenty of acronyms attached to the end of his name to prove it. Waste of space or bother to note it, but they were there. "And aside from their.. 'job' they gave me, I got time." Time and nothing to do. Maybe he could use it as an excuse to run at least some of the damn zombies out of his own medical bay.

Arching a brow slowly, McCoy angled his head a bit at that uncertainty. Granted, he knew for a fact his own gruff exterior made him sometimes unapproachable. "Wasn't all that long ago I got here. Just yesterday actually. I figured I'd walk around. Clear my head. Look at somethin' I know."

Pausing, he glanced back at the room before once more at the other man. "Got a name, kid? Or do I need to make somethin' up?" A vague curl pulled at the corner of his lips. "Otherwise it's gonna be mighty strange tryin' to teach you things."

He knew this place had people from everywhere and every 'when' so to speak. So he may as well clear that up. "Jim got here with the Enterprise before I did. So I assume you might've heard the name. From a planet called Earth. I'm the Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise. Sure you might've hear Jim broadcastin' all that nonsense to any that would listen. No point in me goin' on about it."

Angling his head a little, he quickly took in the other's features and came up with nothing more than lower twenties if he even made it out of his teens. Granted, some people just aged slower. Guy just got lucky, more than likely. The name instantly made him think of Sulu, the origin being Japanese, or seemed like. "Yuuri. Nice to meet ya. I'm Dr. Leonard McCoy."

Part of him wanted to roll his eyes at the reaction to the name Jim. But then, his best friend had a knack of makin' everyone feel welcomed. "Yeah. Jim's ship. He'd date her if she were sentient." That time he did roll his eyes.

Glancing back at him, he smiled just barely, his eyes easing up on a lot of their tension before. "Did he now? Well then, makes it easier to take you over and use my Med Bay to teach you. Cause I don't see them being too kindly to people interfering in their operations. If their lack of willingness to talk is anything to go by."

"You'd be surprised." His voice got quieter there. Lower and thoughtful as he lowered his eyes to the floor. The different images flashed in his head as pieces of the Enterprise fell down to Altamid and thinking just how much that had to kill Jim. Then wondering if Jim was even still alive. A thought that moved him backward still to when they were crashing to earth because of Khan, and the fact Jim didn't survive that one.

The thoughts made him stop. He missed the exchange with the medical bay worker, and when Yuuri finally spoke to him again, he seemed to straighten sharply and blink out of those thoughts. He needed to get past all that. He knew it. Didn't make it none the easier. Breathing in slowly, he tipped his head in one direction for the other man to follow.

"Damn place looks more like a lab than a sick bay anyway." He commented quietly, his eyes straight ahead as he walked away from that infernal place. And really, he needed to take that chance to not think about the past anyway, so he moved them back to the topic of before. "Were you just hopin' to learn first aid or more than that?"

"Maybe that would help, but there is just something unwelcomin' about that place. Aside from the fact they treated without consent and won't tell me a damn thing about what they did to us." He snorted softly in irritation. As a doctor, he had a right to inquire on the hows and whys of his arrival. Instead he was rerouted and pushed toward the orientation and well... no answers were given.

"Wise." He nodded slowly at that and angled his head. "Take it you've never had a typical first aid class, right? Nothin' to start on?" Leonard never really taught basics before, but he didn't mind trying. He actually wasn't a terrible teacher unless you set his grouchiness off like a certain blonde Starfleet Captain.

"I'm sure I can dig up some videos and holograms as well for you to look over to supplement anything I tell ya. And also pretty certain at some point Jim'll get hurt and you can use him for a guinea pig." Oh, he adored the man. But he knew damn well the younger was gonna get hurt at some point.

"Athlete?" He gave that clinical look one more time in curiosity trying to place what sport his physiology would put him in. "What sport? If ya don't mind me askin'." He played basketball back in grade school, but that was about it really. Other than horse riding back at the farm.

Arching a brow at the question about Jim, he hazarded a smile at the grin on Yuuri's face. "I'm sure he'll protest a little." Finally ducking his head, he chuckled to himself. "Jim is that crazy hero type." He looked straight ahead, his gaze shifting to something fonder. "Hasn't got much self-preservation to his name... but more desire to save people than anyone I have ever met."

Guess that's why he worked so damn hard to care for Jim in his place. Cause someone had to keep a man like Jim Kirk alive if he wouldn't do it himself. "So long story short? Yeah. He is a magnet for injury."

"Yeah? I haven't seen that done in a long time. Well, aside from kids on the pond in winter tryin' to pull it off." It wasn't easy to see it professionally anymore. But being in Starfleet and in space made seein' everyday things a bit harder. "So you're professional?"

Blinking at that, he suddenly chuckled at that. "I bet Jim loved that." Guy loved getting int he middle of everything and doing stuff just to prove he could. "I wouldn't mind visiting. I can skate sure, but in circles at best."

Arching a brow, he ducked his head with a soft low laugh. "Don't get your hopes up. Jim has a knack of doing things and doin' them well." Pausing at that last comment, he couldn't stop that nervous habit of running a hand through his hair and making it stand up more. "The best. Not everyone can make someone that hates space as much as I do... go willingly into it." Just so he could keep the blonde idiot in his life and keep him alive.

"That must've been hard." He said it reflexively even if he meant it. Where he wasn't pulled from a moment he didn't want to miss, it was more what he'd been forced to leave behind. Pressing his lips together, he finally let out a sigh. "None of this is good for the lot of us, I'll tell you that."

Pausing, he looked over at him and smiled a little. "It's not that I'm not athletic. Just cautious. Hate risking my hands for anything. What if I need to do surgery and I'm injured? It makes me timid and not want to risk anything. Jim is the total opposite, but I think he pulls it off just fine."

Arching a brow at that sudden question, he snorted under his breath and looked straight ahead. "Space is unending silence full of danger and disease. The unknown and all it's horrifying possibilities wrapped up in nothing but darkness and silence." It made him think about that first day he met Jim. Similar words, but not the same. In fact, he couldn't get too excited about even the prettier views of space knowing anything could just kill them. But then there was how much Jim lit up like a damn Christmas tree for all that stuff.

And he needed to stop that thought right there.

"Also scared to death of flying. Doesn't mean I can't do it. Courage isn't being fearless, right? it's just being able and willin' to overcome your fear."

Angling his head at that, he smirked just a little. "Wouldn't you say you would do similar things to be sure you didn't lose your abilities on the ice? I think if somethin' is a passion, you do what it takes to do your best. I want to save people. Make them whole again. It's what I think I was born to do."

Pausing, he glanced at Yuuri and read the confusion in his face and eyes along with his words. "So basically what you're sayin' is you can't understand why someone like me, a Starfleet Officer, would hate space or say things like that?" On top of the idea of the glamorized space race of the past, Leonard could see why the younger man would be confused. "I had no where else to go after I got divorced. And I actually planned to go into science and medical research and be stationed somewhere. Not go up into that airless void." Cause that's what it was. A void of darkness that had tried to kill him and the crew again and again.

Then his demeanor softened just a little. "Ever met a person that just... drew you in like a moth to the flame? And you cared so damn much that they stayed alive, you'd follow them anywhere? Even to the one place you swore he'd never go willingly? That's why I went up on a ship."
