[ THE HANGAR ]

( it comes as no surprise to rey that it takes no time at all for her to end up surrounded by ships. she's still not entirely convinced that this isn't some weird first order trick, but if it isn't then it's just plain weird. either way she's happiest when she's around vehicles, so that's where rey ends up. the place may be strange but this isn't, and the smell of the hangar is immediately familiar to her. it even manages to tease a smile out of her otherwise scowly face.

at any given point she can be found nosing around various ships. mostly she's content to just lurk from the outside, but occasionally she'll push her luck and climb up the outside to get a better look at things. she's got her mask on though, so there's maybe some plausible deniability if she gets caught? maybe. probably not, honestly.

she starts warming up to the area quite quickly, enough so that she's happy to start experimenting a little with the tools available. there's things that need fixing all over the place -- including the workers -- and rey very ""helpfully"" invites herself to join the crew. is she useful? yes. has she been in any way invited to join in with repair work? no. not at all. she also has some very specific ideas about how exactly some parts should be fixed, which she is glad to make known very loudly. feel free to stop the girl arguing with an actual robot at any point, because she's not looking likely to calm down.

as the days begin to wind down, rey should probably find her bunk. and yet here she is, still lurking in the hangar working away. when she's finally tired enough to call it quits, she just finds a ship with their entrance open and sleeps just inside the main doors. sorry to anyone who actually owns it, rey's only planning on staying a few hours at most, she swears. )

[ THE ATRIUM ]

( this place transfixes her for entirely the opposite reasons to the hangar. growing up on jakku, rey has barely experienced greenery like this, so she becomes kind of obsessed with the rooms. she mostly avoids the zen gardens and sand, not because it bothers her so much as having very little interest in the place, but the gardens.

well she just adores the gardens.

rey is pretty much always barefoot when she's in here, practically running around like a kid in a candy store. her eyes are alight, beaming completely unhindered as she explores every nook and cranny of the place. when she's done that she climbs a tree and sets herself up for a while, idly watching the other people visiting the atrium from her vantage point. it's not at all creepy, she swears. occasionally she might drop her head out of the foliage to greet a stranger, but for the most part she stays hidden. she loves it up here. )

Really, what model? ( surprise surprise, she's actually kind of a huge dork. ) We had an astromech, a BB model, they're newish tech.

KX. He was an Imperial droid that Cassian, um, liberated from his programming. Now he's not an Imperial, but he is a bit of a nob.

[ which is said with some affection, questionable as to who it's meant for. he is a butthead, but he is their butthead. even if he won't admit he likes her. ]

There's nothing like being insulted by a droid.

( particularly in binary, which rey has had a couple of times around the niima outpost. who keeps programming these droids to be so sassy?? )

Imperial ship, imperial droid. People might get the wrong idea, you know.

We've got an Imperial pilot, too. [ now that it's been listed like that, it sounds almost funny. if it weren't for their lives being terrible, horrible things entirely. ] He defected. We wouldn't have been able to do anything without him.

[ BECAUSE HE IS THE BRAVEST PERSON IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY AND SINGLE-HANDEDLY SAVED 2016 SO DON'T FUCK WITH BODHI ROOK. too good, too pure. ]

He must have been brave, it's not easy leaving. ( something that she should have had a chance to tell someone else, too, but in lieu of finn this will have to do. )

I met a defecter too, a stormtrooper.

[ her eyebrows lift in surprise. ]

I didn't know they could defect. [ she knows, intellectually, that there's people inside those suits, she's beat up enough to hear very human sounds of pain but. well, they're storm troopers. they just do as they're told. they don't have opinions and ideas and their own personal rebellions. ]

Neither did I, ( she lifts her arms, a vague gesture intended to mean something like "and yet...". until finn she hadn't even really thought of them as people, terrible as that might be. ) he didn't tell me at first. Guess I get why, now.

( now that the world seems bigger than just a spur of the moment lie from a man who had been a stranger to her. it's amazing what time can do for perspective. )

[ she remembers the distasteful stares the alliance rebels had given bodhi and his uniform and he was only a pilot. she can imagine how they would look at a defecting storm trooper. or her father.

she can also imagine draven's orders.

she pushes to her feet, brushing her pants off before motioning inside the ship. what she wouldn't give to go back and punch him in the face. knowing the logic of his orders and respecting them are two vastly different things. ]

Go on then, finish whatever you were doing.

( if she were holding something rey might drop it. )

( she's sort of already half on her way to clambering back inside, even as she says it. she's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. )

[ what is the harm? aside from rey disturbing the little nest of mattresses and blankets and pillows that indicates people actually sleep in here, in the same little pile, jyn doesn't think it's a big deal. if she breaks something, kay can fix it. he'd enjoy complaining all the while. ]

Yeah. [ following after her tbh. ] Just don't. Break anything.

( and she's gone. she does sort of briefly cast a glance over her shoulder to see if jyn is following -- she is -- but rey's eager to get back to the upgrade project that she's bestowed upon herself. )

I won't! I've done this a thousand times. ( that is a Lie, but she has dismantled a whole heap of imperial ships before and she knows what needs to be done, and that's basically the same thing right? ) If I'm right the whole thing should run smoother after this.

[ if doesn't sound like a thousand times, but she pulls herself up the ladder to the cockpit so she can be nearby without yelling and drapes herself across bodhi's seat. ]

( she has to find a way of phrasing this that doesn't sound like "i'm about to break the crap out of your ship". 'if' definitely wasn't the word to use there, but hindsight is one hell of a thing.
