[Kay-tu originally wanted to be assigned to work with Cassian. Of course he did. There was no point otherwise. He never would have taken this job if not for the other man signing up for it. Jyn as well, but not as much as Cassian. Fine. He was here. He was... assigned as a forward group. Alpha.]

[No big deal.]

[At least he can keep an eye on his partner this way. Jyn wasn't here, nor were the others of their small group. He calculated the odds of Jyn being mad that she didn't get picked and felt they were high.]

[Good. He would smile if he were able to.]

[You can find the droid helping with cargo or set up for deployment. He's not wearing a suit of any sort, no helmet or jump suit, because what was the point. He was made to deal with this kind of thing. He was made to carry more than they had given him too, but at least he still had ease of motion.]

[Do you dare give the droid commands, like he was some common laborer? Or do you talk to him like he was part of a team? It’s a difference that will give a different attitude towards you and others, that’s for sure. Early that morning, Kay can be found going over a few things. They had given everyone weapons and packs, even the droid.]

Giving a droid a canteen of water seems a bit pointless. [He said out loud, yet tucked it away anyhow.] Spare, I suppose, for the needy.

(this doesn't exactly sound overtly friendly, seeing as there's a great deal of sharpness in her voice. it's not personal— no, no, it is overwhelmingly personal, something that crawls over her skin like an infection she can't get rid of. she does and has put up with them before, in tense environments with a lot of distance between them. it's different, being on squadron with one.

[His head lifted and he righted himself, one arm having bent back to put the useless for him canteen on his pack. He lowered his arms and stood there, staring at her. Well... wasn't she fit to decorate a Cantina at some space port in the outer rim.]

[He wasn't sure what she was getting at though.] I am more surprised they haven't given me a few more water packs to haul around for the rest of you.

[if a droid could look confused, the cant of his head indicated as much.]

Equality? [What a Weirdo.] We are hardly equal, and the last thing I want to be mistaken for is a human. [Kay.... that might not have come out like you meant it to sound...]

(she'd like their liquor too, maybe even make friends with the guys who don't like anyone.)

(eyes dropping to the knickknacks around him, raising a brow.)

Why'd you sign up for this?

[If he had a brow to raise, he would have. Instead he's just.... looking at her. Minority? He's a droid. They are a minority in some ways and not in others. But... uprising?]

You have had a bad experience with droids before. [He said, more to a point and not a question.] I am not here to start an uprising, though we were part of a rebellion before coming here. So I suppose I have helped in one.

[He glances off to where Cassian is, across the way a ways, looking over his own gear and talking to someone else. A nod to him to indicate the man before he looked to her again.]

I am only here because he signed up for it. What he says goes.

("droids", maybe. if omnics can be counted as the same; they're similar in appearance. honestly, she never bothered to understand the difference, she just knows she can immobilize them completely if they try anything. it's not an irrational fear, but sometimes sombra wonders if there's a place in her life for it anymore.)

So that's your teammate. (cassian... she texted him once, but no more.) Seems alright so far...

(briefly examining his work with a low hum. while she won't offer to help, she certainly will oversee the process.)

That is my Captain, yes. He is... alright. [he said, as if alright was praise. he paused what he was doing, to look at her. He does have a name. Was she asking?]

[ she's been here a while too, but it's taken carolina a bit to realize that kay-tu is part of the mission team, not just hangar support. which is a little silly, in retrospect, because a synthetic body's going to come in hella handy if things go sideways planetside. taking a break from her own nearly obsessive re-checks of everything, she ventures over in time for one of his complaints. ]

You'd be surprised how often command doesn't know or forgets to acknowledge that they've got a robot on the team.

[He is all too used to people not taking him seriously or considering what he could actually do. Even Cassian seemed to make him babysit a ship more times then he would like instead of being helpful on the job (then again he wonders, sometimes, if the man does it to keep him safe, which is silly).]

[Kay-tu lifted his head as someone came up to him.]

Droid, actually. Robots have less higher thinking functions and are made to do simple tasks. Droids are programmed and built for more optimal needs. And I really wouldn't be surprised. Even my own Captain forgets I can be more helpful to him than most.

[He stood his full height, head tilted to look down at the organic.] Hello.

[ perfectly used to impressively taller people, she still has to be impressed by kay-tu's size and design, unconsciously straightening herself up a little in response. not that she was exactly slouching before. ]

Hi. [ there's an almost-awkward beat from her. ] Carolina, leading Alpha team. We don't have droids where I come from, but I've worked with robots and AI before.

[His size and design is special, built for swift movement as well as taking hits. His type was no longer in production after certain rules were put into place, which might be for the better, really. His model was fairly old now too. There wasn't a need for droids as tall as he was.]

[Perhaps if he had been shorter his personality would have been better.]

[Doubt it.] Oh, so you are the commander for this mission. [He paused, then tilted his head.] Do I need to salute you? [Because he wont anyhow.]

That won't be necessary. I don't have an official rank, anyway. [ she hasn't in years. military protocol was pretty skewed in the project that took up most of her career. ]

What do you prefer to be called?

Good. I'm not much for ranks. Or Saluting. [he said lightly in a flat voice. he did have to pause though, unsure of how to tell her that he didn't care what she called him. Names were organic things, he supposed, but he did like his shortened designation.]

Kay, or Kay-tu, will be fine. There is no point in trying to rattle off my entire designation in a dire situation.

Then let's aim for Kay-tu and no one can get mad when it shortens to Kay when shit happens.

[ agent carolina doesn't led itself well to short variations, but she sure likes when she can drop everyone else to a syllable in the middle of a firefight. ]

What sort of combat experience do you have?

That seems reasonable, Carolina. [She said she had no title so just her name was now what he would call her.]

[His head lifted at the question though.]

Twelve years programmed to assist and work for Cassian Andor and the Rebel Alliance. This includes piloting, infiltration, and combat. Heavy arms, grenades, hand to metal combat, or simply running fast enough. I have scanners and communications set up, as well as some other programs that I will keep to myself if you don't mind. For more specs please speak to Cassian.

[ her brows arch a little, carolina not entirely keeping the impressed expression off her face. this droid seems better than the last robot she worked with, and he came in handy in a pinch as it was. ]

A little extra in the way of supplies never hurt anyone. [ Small talk was becoming something a little more common for Re-L, over time - the whole being around a small, chatty companion type autoreiv and Vincent had worked her from annoyance to simply responding without very much thought. Friendly would be a stretch, but with the way she's torn her pack apart and is reorganizing to the way she would prefer it should say a lot about how Re-L was as a person.

She shakes her own canteen and makes a small hum of acknowledgement. ]

These will need to be refilled once we establish safe sources of water anyway, it would seem.

[ A pause, a glance at the droid, and then - ] You don't have any potential way to scan for contaminants, do you? It's a shot in the dark but Pino managed to shock me with what she was programmed with.

It never hurts anyone so long as it doesn't inhibit my range of motion and movements. [he said flatly, as if this little thing of water was going to inhibit him in anyway. He packed up a few things and paused, turning his head to look at the woman now. That was a good question. At least she didn't ask something stupid, like 'do you have rocket hands'.]

I have a limited range in bio scanning, but I can confirm if water is drinkable for a standard human. A deeper analysis might be better, however. A test kit should be packed for these reasons, or equipment, if they have it here.

I suppose though, I am equipment to these people...

Somehow I doubt that it would, and if it does, it certainly wouldn't hurt you to dump it, now would it? [ After all, he didn't need the thing. Either way, she finds it wholly implausible that the tiny water container could trip him up so much that he might be inspired to throw it away somewhere for the sake of saving his robotic back.

Her brows raise slightly, for a moment, as he turns to look at her, but doesn't flinch - she wants to know, damn it. This was useful information that she may need later on in this mission, and she didn't want to not know and ask him to do anything he wasn't even capable of. ]

Not bad, but I wouldn't count on the crew who sent us here with this small array to send people with things like test kits. [ Ah, she was doing the whole 'bemused joking as a way to deal with her utter disappointment gambit to deal with things now. ]

Pino is an autoreiv - a being that's a bit like you. Mentality of a four year old, unfortunately, as a child-like companion type, but she can tell me exactly how many meters away anything is within her sight line, which is apparently pretty damn far. [ Considering she could see Vincent on top of what was left of the dome. ] There's also Kristeeva, but she is an entourage type and so she has a different set up of capabilities.. That's why I was curious about you.

If someone else needs it, it is here at least. [he said in reply to all that. He might just be complaining is all, as he doesn't mind carrying it. he barely notices it. And if Cassian needs it, he has spare.]

[His head lifted] That is a shame. A test kit should take up no more then an inch of space within a pocket of your suits. Oh. Right. They don't seem to have pockets. [or maybe they do. He didn't wear the suit given to him. As if.] I can analyze it anyhow, to be sure it is fine for organic and basic consumption, though it will only be a scan and not a proper test. [he confirmed.]

Autoreiv? That is a new term for me. It's not like being called a Toaster, is it? [Someone explained that one already.] I can however, do the same. So long as it is in line of sight. In some cases it doesn't have to be line of sight. [yep, that was vague.]

No, they don't. My usual clothes would've been more productive, when it came to that.. [ Though it was a bit cumbersome to get out of, at least there were pockets and space where she could keep things. That was always incredibly useful to say the very least on the subject.

Still, she offers an efficient nod at the elaboration of where he's able to do so far as their food and water supplies, and offers: ] A scan is better than not knowing and eating it anyway.
