[ THE HANGAR ]
( it comes as no surprise to rey that it takes no time at all for her to end up surrounded by ships. she's still not entirely convinced that this isn't some weird first order trick, but if it isn't then it's just plain weird. either way she's happiest when she's around vehicles, so that's where rey ends up. the place may be strange but this isn't, and the smell of the hangar is immediately familiar to her. it even manages to tease a smile out of her otherwise scowly face.
at any given point she can be found nosing around various ships. mostly she's content to just lurk from the outside, but occasionally she'll push her luck and climb up the outside to get a better look at things. she's got her mask on though, so there's maybe some plausible deniability if she gets caught? maybe. probably not, honestly.
she starts warming up to the area quite quickly, enough so that she's happy to start experimenting a little with the tools available. there's things that need fixing all over the place -- including the workers -- and rey very ""helpfully"" invites herself to join the crew. is she useful? yes. has she been in any way invited to join in with repair work? no. not at all. she also has some very specific ideas about how exactly some parts should be fixed, which she is glad to make known very loudly. feel free to stop the girl arguing with an actual robot at any point, because she's not looking likely to calm down.
as the days begin to wind down, rey should probably find her bunk. and yet here she is, still lurking in the hangar working away. when she's finally tired enough to call it quits, she just finds a ship with their entrance open and sleeps just inside the main doors. sorry to anyone who actually owns it, rey's only planning on staying a few hours at most, she swears. )
[ THE ATRIUM ]
( this place transfixes her for entirely the opposite reasons to the hangar. growing up on jakku, rey has barely experienced greenery like this, so she becomes kind of obsessed with the rooms. she mostly avoids the zen gardens and sand, not because it bothers her so much as having very little interest in the place, but the gardens.
well she just adores the gardens.
rey is pretty much always barefoot when she's in here, practically running around like a kid in a candy store. her eyes are alight, beaming completely unhindered as she explores every nook and cranny of the place. when she's done that she climbs a tree and sets herself up for a while, idly watching the other people visiting the atrium from her vantage point. it's not at all creepy, she swears. occasionally she might drop her head out of the foliage to greet a stranger, but for the most part she stays hidden. she loves it up here. )
[ SOMETHING ELSE? ]
( let's get weird. if you've got something in mind, throw me a random starter or hit me up for questions! feel free to request your own personalised starter! if you want to work out how to make tdm threads work for canon, hit me up and we'll figure it out! )

back to jakku. if the amused look on her face is anything to go by, it's pretty clear that rey has no fondness for the place. she's certainly not going to be the one to defend it, even if it hasn't been long since she'd been desperate to get back. ) Sand and junk and lost tourists, that's all there is to Jakku.
( she shrugs, kicking her foot lightly against the floor. she can't deny that she hates jakku more than she does most things, but it's still her home. she almost feels guilty badmouthing it. )
What's your home like? It had to have been more interesting than Jakku, right?
no subject
Home is-- [ cassian. bodhi. chirrut and baze. never letting melshi forget all her fantasies about beating him up. ] I never stayed anywhere long enough to call it home, not since I was a little girl and Lah'mu was just dirt and rain.
[ misty grey beaches and rocky outcroppings and so much mud it was a wonder she stayed clean at all, tromping around in the wet grass with her cavalcade of dolls going on adventures. the real hero of the story is the person that produced a storm trooper doll that stayed white in the mud. real imperial heroes. ]

( it is, of course, a completely different terrain, but the fundamentals don't sound so different at all to rey. maybe she's just making assumptions, projecting some of her life onto this woman who strikes just enough of the same chords to feel familiar, but it sounds lonely. she understands that, at least. )
The only other place I've been is Tadokano, ( she admits with a kind of casualness that is supposed to mask how much the situation might actually bother her. it does not mask how the situation might actually bother her, like at all. ) apart from here, of course. Assuming here isn't some Force mind trick.
( she's like. ninety per cent sure it isn't. )

[ and also she is dead so if this is some force shit, well, she is a force ghost and she's very solid so she doesn't think that is the case. but she makes a mental note to ask kay the likelihood of a massive force-induced hysterical fever dream. ]
I was born on Vallt, but we moved to Coruscant when I still a baby. Then Lokori, then we went to Alpinn before we went back to Coruscant. I was six when I left Lah'mu. [ so many outer rim planets, so little time and slowly the 'we' turned to an 'i' and that's depressing. even more depressing is that the last place she considered home she hasn't seen since she was six. she's definitely not six anymore. ] I've lost track of all the planets I've been to unless I was in prison there.

it's a nice logical explanation though, one she'll file away for use of her own later on most likely. she's not sure which is the preferable option, really, but there's some comfort in believing it's not just her going through this. )
Did you ever have a favourite? ( she has to guess it wasn't one of the prison planets, but she's curious. rey of course has two places ( three if you count the first order's star base, but she very much doesn't ) to choose from, and it's not a choice at all, so in short jyn's story is kind of fascinating to her. she tries not to make it quite so obvious that she's hanging onto every word, but she really, really is. ) I wasn't born on Jakku, I don't think, but I don't remember anything before it.

I'm not sure. [ she didn't go to many places for the fun of it and she struggles to find a place she likes best. home isn't a place for her though, it's a handful of people that forced themselves into her heart and stayed there when everyone else abandoned her. home was bodhi and cassian and, she will never admit it, kay. home was baze and chirrut and saw and her parents letting her color on the edge of their research because galen could never say no to his daughter. her chest tightens thinking about her father. ] Eadu.
[ a terrible, rubbbish heap of a planet, home of one of her worst memories, but also home of one of her most fragile and precious, her father's fingers touching her face. i have so much to tell you. she didn't care. ]

I thought you said it was just rocks?

[ and that is really all that mattered, in the end. her hands spread with a shrug, as if to say, i don't make the rules. ]

watch out, things are about to get real emotional here. )
I thought my family would come back to Jakku. So I stayed.
( if by "real emotional" we mean "less than twenty words of feelings between the pair of them" but you know. progress. )
no subject
Did they? [ she knows the answer already but asks it all the same. ]
no subject
( maz wasn't wrong when she said rey already knew that they weren't coming back to jakku -- but it's still too real to actually say it, to verbalise something she's kept to the quiet recesses of her mind for longer than she remembers.
so, not yet, not no. )
I'm sorry about your father.
( it's a bit presumptuous. she said "was", sure, but that could just as easily have meant he left the planet. but eadu was destroyed, and rey knows grief when she sees it. it's easy to put two and two together. )
no subject
I barely knew him.
[ knew enough, maybe, but all her memories were faded from childhood or else the shell of the man he used to be. her father was a stranger to her when he died, but cassian still had to drag her away. she would have taken a stranger. ]

( rey's spent enough time mourning a family she doesn't remember, mourning a parents that may as well have never existed. she doesn't even remember who dropped her off in jakku. she's spent enough time missing the absence of a family to empathise. it's not the same, of course, rey's parents could still well be travelling the galaxy -- she has to believe it's possible -- but still. still. )
Is he why you joined the rebels?
no subject
The man that raised me was a rebel, one of the first. I guess I took after him.
no subject
( she pauses, touching a hand to her cheek as she thinks for a moment, and then she just tries to look amused instead.
it's not quite a subject line, but she neatly hops away from the heaviness all the same. it's starting to sit on her chest uncomfortably and rey doesn't much like feeling like she's about to choke. ) I was recruited by a droid.
no subject
You and Cassian would get on then. His best friend is a droid.
no subject
Really, what model? ( surprise surprise, she's actually kind of a huge dork. ) We had an astromech, a BB model, they're newish tech.
( she doesn't want to say "after your time" but. she basically said it. )
no subject
[ which is said with some affection, questionable as to who it's meant for. he is a butthead, but he is their butthead. even if he won't admit he likes her. ]
no subject
( particularly in binary, which rey has had a couple of times around the niima outpost. who keeps programming these droids to be so sassy?? )
Imperial ship, imperial droid. People might get the wrong idea, you know.
no subject
[ BECAUSE HE IS THE BRAVEST PERSON IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY AND SINGLE-HANDEDLY SAVED 2016 SO DON'T FUCK WITH BODHI ROOK. too good, too pure. ]
no subject
I met a defecter too, a stormtrooper.
( WHO LIED ABOUT IT but still. )
no subject
I didn't know they could defect. [ she knows, intellectually, that there's people inside those suits, she's beat up enough to hear very human sounds of pain but. well, they're storm troopers. they just do as they're told. they don't have opinions and ideas and their own personal rebellions. ]
no subject
( now that the world seems bigger than just a spur of the moment lie from a man who had been a stranger to her. it's amazing what time can do for perspective. )
no subject
she can also imagine draven's orders.
she pushes to her feet, brushing her pants off before motioning inside the ship. what she wouldn't give to go back and punch him in the face. knowing the logic of his orders and respecting them are two vastly different things. ]
Go on then, finish whatever you were doing.
no subject
...Seriously?
( she's sort of already half on her way to clambering back inside, even as she says it. she's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. )
